Susan Varga was born in Hungary and came to Australia when she was five years old.
She has worked as a teacher, in film and video, as an arts administrator and radio journalist.
Heddy and Me, her internationally renowned book, won the 1994 Christina Stead Award for biography/autobiography. It was shortlisted for three other awards and has been translated into German and Hungarian.
Her other books are a novel, Happy Families (Hodder Headline) and Broometime (with Anne Coombs) (Hodder Headline), a book about a small country town that created a furore in 2000.
