Born in the western suburbs of Sydney, Professor Richard Weller is recognised around the globe for his unique approach to urban design and contribution to a significant number of architectural masterpieces.
Following graduation in landscape architecture at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Professor Weller spent the formative years of his career painting and working freelance on urban design projects, with his creations acknowledged through many international design competitions.Sought after in the wake of the Berlin Wall, Richard was instrumental in the rebuilding of Germany through his contribution to many speculative urban design projects for the country. Nationally, Professor Weller has made his mark on the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, with his work widely exhibited including a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney during 1998.
In 1994, Professor Weller joined the prestigious University of Western Australia as the Professor of Landscape Architecture. His contribution was recognised with a university-wide Excellence Teaching Award in 2003. Having published over 50 papers on contemporary urban design and landscape architecture, Professor Weller also has a monograph of his work, published by the University of Pennsylvania.
Professor Weller has recently delivered Boomtown 2050; an insightful look at Peth, and the extreme economic and environmental pressures it faces today and in the future. Pressures imminent as population projections continue to suggest a doubling in city residents by 2050. Though directly related to Perth, the book presents a model for other cities experiencing rapid growth.
